The Evolution of Workplace Mental Health in Canada: Research Report (2007-2017)

Dr. Samra led a large-scale research investigation into the evolution of Canadian workplace mental health strategies and initiatives. The focus of The Evolution of Workplace Mental Health in Canada was to examine the evolution of Canadian workplace mental health policies and strategies from 2007-2017, with some focus on the evolution of general mental health awareness as a relates to the workplace. There were several major streams of activities for the project, including reviews of the empirical and gray literature; semi-structured interviews with key informants from across Canada; and, a national survey assessing workplace mental health-related attitudes, opinions and current practices. Evolution was examined across several key domains, including the legal and standards domain, shifts in business priorities, trends in the media, changes in the education and training landscape, and shifting research priorities. Within each of these areas, a snapshot of the 2007 state was provided, and key aspects of evolution that had been observed in the decade following are described. Milestones and tipping points, gaps that continue to exist, and sector-specific advances are highlighted.

Guarding Minds @ Work: A Workplace Guide to Psychological Health & Safety (Organizational Assessment)

Dr. Samra was the lead developer of Guarding Minds @ Work (GM@W): A Workplace Guide to Psychological Health & Safety – an innovative, evidence-based online resource used by employers to address psychosocial threats in the work environment. GM@W is an important resource that can help employers assess and address psychosocial risks as outlined by the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health & Safety in the Workplace. The GM@W resources include the GM@W Employee Survey – a completely automated resource that allows you to register and send a link to the survey to every employee. Employee identity is kept confidential and the aggregated results provide a snapshot of how the organization is rated by employees on measures that are known to impact psychological health and safety in the workplace. The GM@W Organizational Review is completed manually, usually by a leadership team. It walks the users through a series of questions about existing conditions, requires an analysis of data, and helps educate about the factors affecting psychological health and safety in the workplace. GM@W also includes a series of Action, Evaluation and Corrective Action resources.
